About:

The site is dedicated to Texas music of any stripe.

We're fans of undiscovered, struggling artists, working their way along and paying their dues. We're also fans of people who have paid their dues, but for one reason or another have never gained admission to major label stardom. In a word or two, we like Texas music and Texas musicians.

Buddy Guy Is Still The Man!

I had the chance to go and shoot Buddy Guy at Stubb’s BBQ.  I got there early and made it to the front of the stage, where I staked out an area from which to photograph one of my guitar heroes.  The place filled up fast and soon there were people from right behind me going all the way back to the Back wall of the outdoor amphitheatre.

The opening band were a fresh faced Roots Americana band named Moreland & Arbuckle.  They did a modern take on ho-down blues and redneck honky tonk.  Guitarist Aaron Moreland even did several songs using a slide with a 4-string instrument who’s body was made from a Partagas cigar box.  All around they were an excellent band.

Buddy Guy hit the stage with a flood of white light.  Wearing a track suit and hat, Buddy played song after song of his unique and often copied brand of Blues.  Alternating between gut wrenching solos and story-teller style singing, Buddy proved  that he is still the original showman.  At 73 years young I was very pleased to witness one of the originals of rock and roll.  Buddy always likes to remind people that he and the folks over at Chess records were doing what became rock long before the British invaded America with the riffs they stole from Buddy, Muddy, Willy and the rest of them.  Long live rock and the people who invented it.  Thank you Buddy for still touring and reminding us where the music that we love so much comes from.

Get out and see a show.  Support the artists that live and work in the Live Music Capital of the World!

Hello, Lovers of Cool Fronts & Open Windows-

Yet another week that Walt is bringing a cool front & rain with him to the Bayou City - thanks for the open windows, brother. Thursday evening (tomorrow), he’ll be playing his songwriter series at the Firehouse Saloon for the 3rd Thursday in a row. His special guests thus far have been Tommy Alverson & Bobby Duncan. This Thursday he’ll be joined by Marcus Eldridge, the long lost Mystiquero & Perfect Stranger. It may be a private show, but as important & musically prominent as you are, just pay off the bouncers and act like black sheep family comin’ home for Thanksgiving dinner.

Then the entire public will be welcome come Friday evening at the Firehouse, as Walt’s brethren, the Mystiqueros, are gonna pucker up & join Walt & Marcus for a MQ reunion. It’s been awhile since Johnny left & Marcus right twanged the twin leads together. This is a fine opportunity for the Bayou City locals to get to ride the chest thumping rhythms, enjoy the 3-part & 4-part harmonies & listen to Walt’s reflective prose before the early season merchants starts to ring the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas season bells. I hope that many of you will join us for the nightly festivities, where someone is sure to get ole Juke Duke to twisting boot leather in the dance arena & bustin’ up the tourists like slow motion bowling pins.

Upcoming Live Events for Public Consumption & A-Muse-Ment

Marcus Eldridge:
Thursday, 10/08/09, 7:30 pm, Main Street Crossing, downtown Tomball
Uncle Mertis will be displaying his wares close to home come Thursday.  There seems to be a strange conspiracy going on - seems like Mertis plays each night that Walt is in the area.
Saturday, 10/10/09, Wildcat Saloon, McCoy, TX with Perfect Stranger
If you want a record that’s gonna please you & wake you with Marcus or Clint wailing in your head, then Shake the World is your ticket to long sleepless nights.

Walt Wilkins:
Thursday, 10/08/09, 8 pm?, Firehouse Saloon, with Tommy Alverson
Yes, WC + Tommy Alverson will be in the Bayou City this Thursday evening, so take off Friday if you must.  Plus Walt will be returning to the Firehouse again and again for 3 more Thursdays in October & November with special guests and Friday, 10/23/2009, with the Mystiqueros.  I’m not sure why so many Thursdays in Houston, but maybe he’s gonna try to help break this bayou metro from a couple of its bad habits.  As Davis Raines moans, “Whoa, the flesh is weak, whoa, I live in crisis, reckon where I’d be without my vices?  Bad habits, they get me everytime - bad habits always cost me down the line”.
