About:

The site is dedicated to Texas music of any stripe.

We're fans of undiscovered, struggling artists, working their way along and paying their dues. We're also fans of people who have paid their dues, but for one reason or another have never gained admission to major label stardom. In a word or two, we like Texas music and Texas musicians.

Help Austin Help Haiti Show

The Austin Music Hall played host to a ten hour show recently in an effort to raise money for the relief effort going on in Haiti.  As one might imagine, that is a long freakin time to be standing about watching music and swilling your favorite beverage.  Add to that fact that the show was held on a Sunday, and you have a real possibility of keeping people from their respectable day jobs the next day.  I got to ground zero and was in the door by 1:45 p.m.  The first band was already playing their last song.  I did not leave the Music Hall again until just before midnight.  It was a marathon show to be sure, but it was a wonderful opportunity to see Austin’s best musicians.

The show was put together in less than a week by Joe Ely.  He sent out the call to arms to everyone in the Austin scene.  By Tuesday before the show he had a 3 hour set.  By Thursday that had grown to 10 hours.  He worked hard to get items and services for a silent auction and many people came to aid him in that endeavor. There was everything from fine confectionary tastys to all manner of rare music memorabilia and Austin cool.  Many a dollar was raised in that one little room.  The final tally at the end of the night was unspoken, but nearly 3000 people paid the 33 bucks to get in the door.  There was food as well, all donated by Austin’s coolest and most notorious eateries.  Torchies Tacos, The Salt Lick, and Austin Pizza served Thousands of dollars worth of food.  So after all was said and done, the evening can only be called a success.
The band roster for the night was simply spectacular.  Any one of these artists are worth going to see, but when they are all going to be playing 20 minute sets stacked up on top of one another, well as I said it was spectacular.

Asleep At The Wheel
Patricia Vonne
Guy Forsyth
Paula Nelson
Band of Heathens
Bob Schnider
The Flatlanders
Shawn Colvin
Bruce Robinson
Kelly Willis
Ray Wylie Hubbard
The Gourds
Reckless Kelly
The Joe Ely Band
Marcia Ball
Robert Earl Keen
Charlie Sexton with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon

How could I possibly pick one or two performances to highlight?  I thought that Patricia Vonne was awesome.  The Highlanders was a treat.  Sharing Ribs and eating beans that were made by Ray Wylie Hubbard was definitely a highlight.  I left before midnight so I missed Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton.  Charlie Sexton was so late that we all feared that he might not make it at all.  That is easily forgiven considering the fact that he was in L.A. playing the big Cable benefit for George Clooney only a couple of days before with Justin Timberlake.   There was a nasty rumor that the Arc Angels were going to play, but I had it from good authority that Doyle Bramhall II was in L.A. in the recording studio.  Always a good thing, but that meant that there would be no Angels reunion for the cause.

All in all it was a very special night of music in Austin Texas.  There was something for everyone, and by the end of the night I saw many people that would still be drunk if they ventured into work in the morning.  I, having kept it down to three beers in 10 hours, had no problem with that the next morning.  If you were there or participated in the Auction I thank you.  If you were not there, then I feel sorry for you.  You missed something rare.  I guess what touched me most is that all of these people, with there busy schedules and tours and careers, dropped everything at a moments notice to be there and try to help make a difference.

Get out and see a show.  Support these special people who make up the scene of the Live Music Capitol of the world.

Buddy Guy Is Still The Man!

I had the chance to go and shoot Buddy Guy at Stubb’s BBQ.  I got there early and made it to the front of the stage, where I staked out an area from which to photograph one of my guitar heroes.  The place filled up fast and soon there were people from right behind me going all the way back to the Back wall of the outdoor amphitheatre.

The opening band were a fresh faced Roots Americana band named Moreland & Arbuckle.  They did a modern take on ho-down blues and redneck honky tonk.  Guitarist Aaron Moreland even did several songs using a slide with a 4-string instrument who’s body was made from a Partagas cigar box.  All around they were an excellent band.

Buddy Guy hit the stage with a flood of white light.  Wearing a track suit and hat, Buddy played song after song of his unique and often copied brand of Blues.  Alternating between gut wrenching solos and story-teller style singing, Buddy proved  that he is still the original showman.  At 73 years young I was very pleased to witness one of the originals of rock and roll.  Buddy always likes to remind people that he and the folks over at Chess records were doing what became rock long before the British invaded America with the riffs they stole from Buddy, Muddy, Willy and the rest of them.  Long live rock and the people who invented it.  Thank you Buddy for still touring and reminding us where the music that we love so much comes from.

Get out and see a show.  Support the artists that live and work in the Live Music Capital of the World!

Hello, Lovers of Cool Fronts & Open Windows-

Yet another week that Walt is bringing a cool front & rain with him to the Bayou City - thanks for the open windows, brother. Thursday evening (tomorrow), he’ll be playing his songwriter series at the Firehouse Saloon for the 3rd Thursday in a row. His special guests thus far have been Tommy Alverson & Bobby Duncan. This Thursday he’ll be joined by Marcus Eldridge, the long lost Mystiquero & Perfect Stranger. It may be a private show, but as important & musically prominent as you are, just pay off the bouncers and act like black sheep family comin’ home for Thanksgiving dinner.

Then the entire public will be welcome come Friday evening at the Firehouse, as Walt’s brethren, the Mystiqueros, are gonna pucker up & join Walt & Marcus for a MQ reunion. It’s been awhile since Johnny left & Marcus right twanged the twin leads together. This is a fine opportunity for the Bayou City locals to get to ride the chest thumping rhythms, enjoy the 3-part & 4-part harmonies & listen to Walt’s reflective prose before the early season merchants starts to ring the Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas season bells. I hope that many of you will join us for the nightly festivities, where someone is sure to get ole Juke Duke to twisting boot leather in the dance arena & bustin’ up the tourists like slow motion bowling pins.

August Sun, Hot Music, and Ass Burn

Yep… Ass burn.  There was a vendor giving out samples of some ridiculously hot sauce with that ever so appealing moniker.  People were standing in line waiting for the spicy torture that can let loose an amazing rush of endorphins.  The only problem is that if it goes in hot…  you get the point.

The 19th annual Austin Hot Sauce Festival is a regular part of the Wells family Austin calendar.  It is always during the hottest part of the summer.  This year it was nice at 99 degrees in the shade.  We were there to eat drink and listen to some music.  We came to the right place.

Two beers down and I leave my wife and daughter in some shade and head for the front of the stage.  Three other bands had already played and Paula Nelson was on the band stand crooning into the microphone.  I dont know whether it was the heat or what but she seemed reserved.  Her smile was omnipresent and her voice was crystal clear, but it seemed to me that she was holding something back.  Having seen her before tearing up the stage at Bat Fest in 2008 (another Wells family calendar item), I guess it was the heat.  I took a few photos and went back to get more beers and ice for my daughters neck bandanna.  We stood around a while next to an Austin head-shop vendor trying to convince my 4  year old that those pretty glass pipes were not toys or Christmas ornaments.  They did have some bubbles though.  We headed for the cooling station after that for some water and a turn standing in front of an evaporative cooler.

The last band of the afternoon was called T-Bird and the Breaks.  I wrote about them in this blog in January I think.  They had opened up for The Diamond Smugglers.  Anyway these guys have been on the road all summer playing what used to be the chitlin circuit.  Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and of course Austin.  They do this new old-school funk with a simple driving base line, super rhythmic guitar, three horns and some hot chicks singing back up.  The drummer was like a metronome.  Song after song the made the crowd, us included, bounce in the sunny heat oblivious to the dangers of dehydration and stroke.  Damn they jammed.  This is a band I would pay good money to see with or without my camera in tow.  Go and see them when ever you can.

Hot, still sweating, and wishing for Ice cream, go out and see some music.  Where ever you are in Texas.
